Suffolk self catering holiday accommodation
Oriel Cottage, High Street, Aldeburgh
About the property
Ideally positioned on Aldeburgh’s High Street, Oriel Cottage is a pretty ‘suffolk pink’ fisherman’s cottage dating back to the 18th century. Just a few short steps from the beach, it’s also just a few doors from Aldeburgh’s wonderful shops, deli’s and restaurants (and the temptations of the famous Ice Cream Parlour and Fish and Chip Shop!)
The house has been lovingly restored and is filled with period and contemporary features from its beamed sitting room and first floor ‘oriel’ window to its hand-painted kitchen and Fired Earth bathrooms. Throughout there are modern touches, such as the colourful gypsy chandeliers and an 8” drenching shower that you won’t want to get out of! All in all we think this lovely holiday cottage the super for a summer break or a cosy winter weekend retreat for both families and couples alike.
The house has a light and airy feel throughout and is laid out over three floors. It has two king-size bedrooms, one twin bedroom, one bathroom with a roll top bath and one downstairs shower-room. Because the twin room is up a staircase with a very low head height we wouldn’t recommend this room to the very tall or elderly (but if you’re agile it’s well worth the clamber up).
Ground Floor:
Living/dining room: The front door leads into a large living/dining room with painted floorboards and exposed beams and a wood burning stove. There are two large sofas to seat six, complete with brightly coloured scatter cushions. In the alcove is a handmade cupboard with a good supply of games, CD’s and DVD’s. Above this, you’ll find a Sony flat screen LCD TV, a DVD player, radio/CD player, and Sky TV and shelves stocked up with some potential holiday reading. There is also a large solid oak dining table with wooden benches either side, perfect for a long Aldeburgh supper.
Kitchen: The living room leads through to the kitchen with its traditional herringbone laid terracotta floor, handpainted units, solid oak work surfaces and a double Belfast sink. There is a freestanding Smeg cooker with a gas hob and electric oven and an extractor above, and a microwave to the side. Below the worktops you’ll find a dishwasher and two undercounter fridges one with a small freezer compartment. There is also a low breakfast bar with two stools just right for perching children at. There is a staircase leading to the first floor (with a door at the bottom) and an understairs cupboard with a washing machine, and room for coats and boots.
Beyond the kitchen is a shower-room with a large shower enclosure with an 8” chrome shower rose and a separate hand held shower attachment, w.c. and hand basin with a shaver point. There are mosaic tiles and a period radiator towel rail.
First floor:
Family bathroom: This room has a deep free-standing Fired Earth bath, a w.c. and basin with a shaver point. Above the sink is a fun mirror with concealed LED lights that you operate by waving you hand in front of. The tiles are aged roman mosaics with a number of hand painted dolphin mosaic feature tiles on the floor.
Bedroom 1: This has a really comfortable king size brass bed, built-in wardrobe, a chest of drawers and bedside tables. The pretty oriel window is in this room, with super views both up and down the high street. There is a bedside clock radio with a dock for your i-Pod.
Bedroom 2: There’s another comfortable king size brass bed, exposed painted floorboards, a built-in wardrobe with hanging space and shelves, and bedside tables. In the wardrobe there is a vanity area with a light above.
Second floor: The staircase to the second floor is full of character and winds it’s way up to the attic room. Headroom is tight here so think who you suggest has the top room! The attic room itself has a lovely dormer window making it extremely bright, and there are two shaker style single beds, each with it’s own wall light above. There is a chest of drawers and hooks on one of the walls with coat hangers to hang clothes. There’s also a TV and a play station up here.
Outside and to the front and rear of the cottage are small painted patios with pot plants and trellis holding jasmine that’s on its way up the wall. At the back there is a small courtyard with a table and chairs and a BBQ, and a gate that leads down a covered pathway with direct access across to the Kings Street /Crag Path beach wall.
On-road parking is usually available either in the bays to the front of the house (these are time limited), in the pay and display car park just to the rear of the house (daily and weekly permits available) or free in nearby side streets.
